Mohamed S. Ghidaoui

Chair Professor and Chinese Estates Professor of Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 

 

Title: The Fascinating World of Waves and Their Hydraulic Engineering Applications--Examples from Hong Kong & Beyond

Introduction: M. S. Ghidaoui was born in Tunisia. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1989, Master’s Degree in 1991 and Ph.D. in 1993 all in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada. He immediately joined the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST), where he currently holds the positions of Chair Professor and Named Chinese Estates Professor. He is the Vice-President of IAHR, Distinguished Fellow of IAHR and Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers.  He served as the chair of IAHR’s Fluid Mechanics for 5 years. He served as the chief editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Research from 2016 to 2023 and as its associate editor from 2002 to 2016. He serves as associate editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, ASCE, and Journal of Hydro-environment Research, IAHR-APD; editorial board member of the Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letters, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics; and served as an advisory board of the Journal of Hydroinformatics for 12 years. His awards include the Arthur Ippen Award, the Albert Berry Memorial Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award and 2 teaching excellence awards, and silver medal at the recent International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland. Ghidaoui has 5 US patents, one of which related to time reversal of waves has been licensed by Hyele Limited ─ a startup company in Hong Kong.
