Technical Visits

The Congress provides five technical visit routes during conference for participants to choose (no extra fee payment). The Technical Visits are scheduled for the afternoon of October 16, 2024. Guests in need please contact the staff for registration.

ROUTE 1: The Yangtze River Flood Protection Physical Model

The Yangtze River Flood Protection Model is a comprehensive scientific research platform that integrates the world's largest river engineering physical model, complex mathematical models of water and sediment dynamics in rivers and lakes, and advanced measurement, control, and simulation systems. The model enables in-depth studies on critical issues regarding complex erosion and deposition processes, river regime adjustments, and river-lake relations in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River (formerly known as the Yangtze River) after the operation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP) and its upstream reservoirs on the mainstream and tributaries. These studies provide scientific basis for basin planning, flood control scheduling and decision-making, river and lake management, exploitation and protection. The model was validated via tests from 2006 to 2007. Since 2008, it has been engaged in various research projects including dozens at national, provincial, or ministerial levels, as well as numerous engineering research projects such as the demonstration of navigation channel improvement projects in the Changjiang River, yielding abundant research findings.

ROUTE 2: The East Lake

East Lake, located in the eastern part of Wuchang in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, is currently one of the largest urban lakes in China with a water area of 33 square kilometers. It was formed by the siltation of the Yangtze River. As a lake in a mega city, East Lake carries multiple functions such as urban water supply, agricultural irrigation, scenic tourism, urban climate regulation, water sports development, aquatic products cultivation, and urban sewage storage. Its comprehensive functions, ecological, economic, and social benefits are beyond the capabilities of ordinary lakes.

Meanwhile, East Lake is the largest center for Chu cultural tourism, showcasing strong Chu traditions with exquisite charm. The Xingyin Pavilion enjoys widespread fame; the Li Sao Stele boasts three wonders with its scale, poem, and calligraphy; the Chutiantai Pavillion features a magnificent presence; the Chu Talent Park gathers numerous distinguished figures; the Chu market, Qu Yuan Statue, and Qu Yuan Memorial Hall are rich in cultural heritage and are renowned far and wide.

ROUTE 3: The Yangtze River Beach

Hankou River Beach, located in the Jiang'an and Jianghan Districts of Wuhan City, spans 1.6 million square meters. Adjacent to Yanjiang Avenue and facing the Wuchang Yellow Crane Tower Scenic Area, it is embraced by the Yangtze River, creating a charming landscape in the central area of Wuhan. Since the early 21st century, Wuhan has undertaken comprehensive flood control and environmental improvements along the river beach. The newly built Wuhan River Beach features extensive green belts and offers riverside spaces for public leisure activities. The newly built beach serves three major functions for urban landscape and greening ecology, fitness and entertainment, and water friendly leisure activities. Wuhan residents have a deep connection to and an unbreakable bond with the Yangtze River. In the past, high waterproof walls built for flood control obstructed citizens' desire for the river. Now, flood control projects on the riverbank combined with environmental improvements rejuvenate the riverbank and transform it into a beautiful "business card" of Wuhan City.

ROUTE 4: The Changjiang Civilization Museum

The Changjiang Civilization Museum covers an area of 31,000 square meters, with an exhibition area of 12,800 square meters. It is divided into "Preface Hall", "Entering the Yangtze River Hall", "Perceiving Civilization Hall", and "Dreaming Yangtze River Hall", and has a collection of 9,141 items. The permanent exhibition "Song of the Yangtze River, Journey of Civilization" focuses on how water nurtures human beings, how humans create civilization, and how civilization integrates with ecology. Typical cultural relics and specimens from the Yangtze River Basin showcase the natural ecology and historical civilization of the Yangtze River. Highlights are national treasures such as the adorable giant panda, the endangered Chinese sturgeon, the "plant fossil" dove tree (Gongtong in Chinese), Tangka paintings and bronze drums reflecting Tibetan and Yunnan cultures. Other pieces include bronze wine vessel, Zenghou bronze sword, bronze food utensil, and Dafu bronze measuring cup reflecting the Jingchu culture, Liangzhu Jade Cong reflecting the Wuyue culture, as well as exquisite cultural relics.

ROUTE 5: Hubei Provincial Museum

The Hubei Provincial Museum, as the ancestral hall of Jingchu culture, is a national key museum jointly built by the central and local governments. The Hubei Provincial Museum currently has a collection of over 460,000 pieces (sets), including 1,095 pieces (sets) of national first-class cultural relics, collectively known as the "Top Ten Treasures of Town Museums". In addition, it has one national intangible cultural heritage project, five provincial-level intangible cultural heritage projects, and one district-level intangible cultural heritage project. The collection of Zenghouyi's Bianzhong (bronze bell set) has been included in the fifth batch of China's archival and documentary heritage list. The museum has a layout of "four museums, three centers, and two bases", covering a total construction area of 125,000 square meters, including an exhibition area of 38,000 square meters, ranking among the top museums in China. In 2023, it has received more than 4.3 million visitors from China and abroad.
